HOWTO: CanoScan LiDE 80 under MacOS 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

So you've got an old scanner and want to make it work under Snow Leopard? MacDiddy to the rescue, even if the instructions are slightly incomplete - here go the complete ones:

Prerequisites:

Rosetta must be installed; if it isn't installed already, follow these instructions. Not sure if Rosetta is already installed? Perform the following steps:
- Launch terminal: Applications->Utilities->Terminal
- Type this into the Terminal window:
ls -l /usr/libexec/oah/
and hit enter.
If "translate" shows up you've got Rosetta installed.

Rosetta is installed.

Installation:

  1. Download and install CanoScan Toolbox (get it from Canon here, or if it isn't available anymore, locally here). Disregard the fact that Canon says it works only up to MacOS 10.4.
  2. Download and install the LiDE 80 driver (get it from Canon here, or if it isn't available anymore, locally here). Unfortunately the installer doesn't quite do his job, so a couple of files have to copied manually:
  3. Mount the LiDE driver installation disk image (LiDE80_7252MXEN.dmg) if it isn't still mounted, and navigate to the the "Into Users_shared" folder, where you will find a folder called "CanoScanLiDE80". Copy this folder to your hard disk to Macintosh HD -> Users -> Shared.
  4. If you are using Photoshop, perform step 5 of Macdiddy's instructions.
  5. Reboot the machine.
  6. With the scanner attached, launch the CanoScan Toolbox and scan away.

Scanning still not possible..

HI, thx for your detailled introduction to install the CanoScan Lide80, but I think in 2012 it´s too late for installing this stuff proper, or?
I did everything you described, but now I got a message that the scan plugin was not found.
Thx for your help, Andrea

Thanks a lot!

Unfortunately I have not found this comment from the very beginning, but it has helped a lot! Now I can use my scanner.

I think I followed your directions, but when I try to scan I get" the scanner plug-in was not found. What did I do wrong? Hugh

Thank you for this info. My Canon LiDE 80 is now working with Snow Leopard 10.6.2 after following these instructions. I started out with the MacDiddy instructions and finished up with your crucial step 3 of copying CanoScanLiDE80 into the shared users folder. One note about Rosetta-I got a window telling me that I needed to install it as soon as I started the CanoScan Toolbox software installation. A couple of 'OK' clicks later and it was taken care of very easily. Thanks again!

Richard, the driver itself shouldn't ask for an install location - try following the instructions in LiDE80quickstartguide-e.pdf (which is available here) if you have any doubts or problems.
